How to Choose the Best Composite Decking for Your Project

Piranha TerraFuzion Sandstone

When it comes to upgrading your outdoor space, introducing a modern deck is one of the best ways to make a statement. Whether you’re looking to integrate decking into your lawn, as a decorative pathway, or for an isolated terrace or patio, composite decking can add style as well as value to your home.

In this guide, we reveal how to plan your composite decking installation, from establishing its suitability for your project to identifying the best type of composite decking and choosing the right colour.

Unlike traditional decking, which is manufactured using wood, Piranha composite decking is constructed from a combination of FSC Certified timber and recycled HDPE plastic. These eco-friendly materials offer a longer lifespan that can withstand the damaging effects insects and weather can have over time.

Longevity is just one of the benefits of composite decking, but there are other things to consider. Read on to find out if composite decking is suitable for your project.

Is Composite Decking Suitable For My Project?

Composite decking benefits from several premium features that you can’t guarantee from a traditional decking alternative. By choosing composite decking, you can expect:

Anti-slip properties

Most composite decking has anti-slip qualities built-in, providing added safety in all weather conditions. This makes it much less slippery than traditional wooden options. Usually, timber decking is extremely absorbent and causes deterioration too, unlike composite decking which doesn’t absorb moisture. You can find solutions for slippery decking on our 6 Solutions for Slippery Decking blog.

Fade resistance

All our Piranha products contain UV stabilisers, however, due to their high natural content, all composite landscaping products will go through an initial colour stabilisation. This will commonly be noticed when moving seasonal fixtures, such as flowerpots or garden furniture. When the products are initially exposed to variable temperatures and humidity, some shade change can occur as the product stabilises. You can learn more about colour stabilisation here.

Low maintenance

One of the primary reasons people choose to install composite decking over other patio and decking solutions is because of the low upkeep. Composite decking doesn’t require a strenuous cleaning routine, as a simple washdown will help bring it back to its original glory. Find out more in our how to clean composite decking guide.

An extended lifespan

Composite decking can be a wise investment and you don’t need to worry about replacing it after a short period. If you take care of your composite decking you can expect it to have a lifespan of 25 - 30 years.

What Type of Composite Decking is Best?

Once you’ve decided on composite decking as an option for your project, you’ll need to decide on what type is most suitable. There are plenty of options to choose from - however, we always recommend carrying out your research alongside consulting with a professional installer, as quality and costs can vary between suppliers.

Some of the main types of decking available in the UK include:

PVC Deck Boards

Similar to composite decking, but less durable and aesthetically pleasing than the higher quality material, PVC decking is made from 100% plastic which means there is potential for it to fade in colour over time, as some are not UV stable.

Uncapped Composite Deck Boards

These are often referred to as entry-level composite boards and tend to lend themselves to modest budgets. Depending on where you purchase your decking, quality specifications and component material selection can vary so it’s worth doing your research.

Our uncapped composite deck boards can be found in our Hunter range and comes with a 10-year domestic warranty.

Part Capped Composite Deck Boards
Price-wise, capped decking usually falls under a higher budget than uncapped alternatives. Part-capped composite products tend to be the least popular, as they’re not fully protected on all four sides. They are usually used less than the other deck boards mentioned in this list.

Fully Capped Composite Deck Boards

If you’re looking for the best and longest-lasting composite decking, fully capped deck boards are the way to go. These deck boards are growing in popularity, as they look contemporary and complement all types of outdoor spaces.

Protected on all four sides, capped composite decking offers the best overall performance and generally has the best technical properties on the list. Our fully capped composite deck boards can be found in our Terrafuzion range. They are dual-sided allowing you to mix two colours within the same project for contrasting features. Our Terrafuzion range comes with a 25-year domestic warranty.

Mineral Resin Deck Boards
This tends to be the most expensive composite decking on the market. They provide a high-quality board usually available in a range of colours and finishes, however, they can have a poor overall resistance to fire and often be unsuitable for cleaning with pressure washers.

Choosing the Right Colour For Your Composite Deck

The colour of the composite decking is often the feature people will be most drawn to. When choosing a colour for your composite deck, make sure that it complements either your garden, the shade of your house brick, or the soffits and fascias on your home.

For warmer-toned brickwork, opt for natural wood shades like brown or tan decking. Our Hunter decking in ‘brown’ offers a traditional feel, ideal for homeowners who wish to have the aesthetics of natural wood, but with all of the low maintenance benefits of composite decking.

For cooler tones, select a darker shade with black or blue undertones, such as grey. Our Terrafuzion range comes in a Sandstone/Island Mist shade that is ideal for a light, cool-toned decking area. Offering two light shades of grey, it’s the perfect choice for those wanting to incorporate a modern grey colour palette whilst keeping a lighter aesthetic.

Our two decking ranges, Hunter and Terrafuzion offer a range of colours and finishes to suit any taste, project, home or budget.

Planning Your Composite Decking Installation

Now you have an idea of what composite decking you should purchase for your project, you need to start planning your installation, keeping in mind any wider considerations relating to the project.

It’s important to consider how much outdoor space you have available for your decking, and the angles in your garden that you need to be mindful of, as well as preparing the ground before the installation.

You’ll also need to subframe or add hidden fixings and decide if you want to frame your composite decking with edging boards. Whatever design you end up choosing, be sure to consult with a professional before undertaking any construction.
